Anyone with any savvy will tell you that one of the most important steps when building a home business is setting realistic goals for yourself. As you educate yourself and learn the ropes of building a successful home business – online or off – it will become easier and easier to set those goals. That’s because you will begin to see the results of your efforts and will be able to base future goals on the results already obtained.
But what about when you’re just starting out? How do you tell the difference between what is realistic and what is just wishful thinking? In all honesty, that’s actually quite difficult, because you have yet to see any concrete results to evaluate. So, what can you do?
Here’s a novel idea (and this may upset a few “gurus”): don’t set any goals. Say what? You read that right, don’t set any goals when you’re just starting out. As you do not yet truly know what is realistic in your chosen home business, you run the risk of setting yourself up for disappointment and frustration. The greater the disappointment or the deeper the frustration, the greater the risk of sabotaging future efforts. You may even wind up abandoning the whole shebang.
So, again, what can you do? First, understand that building a successful home business takes more than just education and effort; it takes time and it takes focus. The time it takes can be months or it can be years – that will depend largely on what you consider to be a success. Next (here’s the focus) ask yourself why you want to build a successful home business.
At first glance, that seems to be an easy question to answer, doesn’t it? “I want to be financially independent, of course, so I can do the things I really enjoy doing.” Those “things” will be vastly different for each of us, so there’s no point in going into that here. But in that answer lays another question that can be one of the keys to your success. Not knowing the answer to that hidden question could be the doom of your home business.
Here’s the hidden question: why do you enjoy doing the things that financial independence will allow you to do? In other words, what benefits do you associate with the act of doing those things? Your answers to that question (you may find several) will help you define your driving forces – your motivation. To help you find your answers, here are some things that you may wish to consider:
* If the activities you enjoy involve adventure and discovery, then by all means, set no goals. The entire process of learning about home business and building your own will thus become a stimulating process of discovery.
* If you have a creative spirit and enjoy a multitude of activities wherein you can develop new talents and express your creativity, you’re in for a treat. Building a home business will, in and of itself, provide you with many avenues to do exactly that. Just try to avoid getting sidetracked into too many other projects. (That’s my personal demon!)
* If the things you enjoy doing most involve having others participate (your family, friends or children), get them involved! Have brainstorming sessions and discuss ways in which they can actively participate in the development of your home business. Delegate some fun tasks to each of them so they can stay motivated too.
* Even if your joy is sitting at home in your skivvies with the balcony door wide open, cuddling with your cats, you will probably have a lot of fun building your own home business (you don’t need a suit and tie to do it!).
In conclusion, begin by defining why you wish the financial independence that a thriving home business can give you. Then, structure your business building activities in such a way as to provide you with the pleasures and joys you desire right now. It will be much easier to maintain your motivation as you build your home business because you will already be enjoying the benefits and advantages you associate with having it. So, get the ball rolling, but make it fun too!
