Have you ever had an idea for something and years later saw a commercial for almost the same product on television? I know I sure have, and I kicked myself in the butt for it for never acting on the idea in the first place. The job of an inventor is pretty simple: Think of a new product or make improvements to a product that has already been made.
There are three rules that I think apply to inventions that you should follow closely. First off, it needs to be affordable. Nobody is going to buy it if it can not fit into their budget.
Secondly, it needs to be convenient. They will not want to carry something big and bulky around in their purse.
The most important rule is that it actually has to solve a problem. You do not have to find the cure for a horrible disease out there. Even the most simple of solutions will be very much appreciated. You will want to be keep a close eye on your competitors to make sure that your product has not either already been invented or is too similar to something else already out there.
Nobody is going to spend a ton of money making your product if it is already sitting on the shelves. Once you have brainstormed your ideas and came up with an exact plan you will need to make a prototype. This just means that it is a place to start with your invention. It is by no means a finished product. Once you have finished it, however, you need to get a patent on it to make sure that nobody steals your idea.
There will never cease to be opportunities for inventors to make money because there will always be problems that people need solved.
