You’ve thought about it for years. Being your own boss and making your own rules. No more sitting through meetings involving something you really don’t care about. You long for the chance to really love your work and show others your passion. You want to start your own business. The problem is how to start a new business.
In order for your new business to have a chance of thriving, you need to be passionate about it. This means it has to be centered around something you love. You need to make sure that you will be as interested in the field a year from now as today. Do you know how to start a new business doing what you love without knowing what you love? Let’s start with a list.
1. Make a list of all your hobbies and anything that you enjoy doing. Also write down anything that you really like. Do you like tea and coffee? Write it down. Enjoy reading? Write it down. Crocheting? Decorating? Housework? No matter what it is, write it down. Write it down even if you think others will think it’s silly.
2. Now start narrowing your list. There are things we enjoy and then there are things we enjoy and are good at. Some people assume that because you enjoy something you are good at it. I love to sing, but I can’t carry a tune. Cross off anything that you know you won’t be able to create a business around.
3. Ask your friends and family what they see you doing if you were to start your own business. Their answers might surprise you. It might be something you hadn’t considered. Write all their answers down.
4. Compare your list with your friends and family’s answers to your question in step 3. Are there any you absolutely could not see yourself doing? If so, cross them off.
5. Look at what’s left on your list. Can you convert any of these things into a successful business? If not, start again at step 1 and do it all again.
Once you have decided what type of business you want to go into, it’s time to plan how to start a new business. There are many good websites to help you get started. One in particular is the Small Business Administration website at SBA.gov.
