Jobs from home were once a rare commodity. As the recession is growing around the world, they are becoming more and more common. Businesses are seeking to reduce expenses and they can do this by outsourcing work to those who are willing to work at home. This means fewer benefits are awarded as these are often independent contractors and that there are lower overhead costs as equipment and office space isn’t being set aside for the same number of employees.
But what do you get out of working from home? If the big men upstairs are able to save money by allowing you to work at home, what are you getting in exchange?
One benefit is your time. Your commute, dropping kids off at day care, picking them up, driving to and from work, and stopping off for frequent gas fill ups takes time. Eliminating the need for a commute, running to and from a baby sitter’s house or day care center can actually add hours to your week if not your day. What could you do with an extra hour or two each and every day?
You gain productivity. Do you have any idea how much time is lost at the office due to frequent interruptions, coffee breaks, water cooler discussions, and other distractions that rob you of productivity and stop the creative flow? While there will be some distractions when you work from home there are generally fewer people sharing your office space. This means that you can generally be more productive with fewer stops and starts along the way.
Let’s not forget sanity. While the office for some is a great source of adult interaction it is also, far too often, the source of ill will and negative feelings. You can eliminate these feelings by eliminating the needs to go into the office. Doing this will save you a great deal of sanity in the long run and you can still maintain positive relationships through email, text messages, instant messaging, and the occasional girl or guys night out while avoiding the office politics altogether.
