Starting a home business can be one of the most exciting and frightening (at the same time) ventures you will ever undertake. For both of these reasons it is a good idea to make sure you have a few things established before you hang your shingle and declare yourself “open for business.”
Do you have a space set aside in which to run your business? Even if you do not have an office it is a good idea to establish a business area in your home. The further this area is from the television, the better. The purpose of this zone is to serve as a space where you can go and take care of your business each and every day. This is a space that is off limits for the family and should only be used for the purpose of business.
Do you have office hours set up? One thing experience has taught time and time again is that when you work from home it is very important to establish work time and family time and avoid, whenever possible, mingling the two. When you have small children home with you there are obviously moments when that is impossible but for the most part you should make an honest effort to keep them separate.
Do you have the equipment you need? For some, nothing more than an Internet connection and decent computer are required. Other businesses may require unlimited long distance, an 800 number, storage space for inventory, a fax machine, a high speed Internet connection, a specific kind of printer, and/or countless other items.
Do you have a plan for your business? Do you have immediate and long term goals for your business? Do you have those goals written down? Do you have a plan in place, and written down, for how you are going to accomplish these goals? It’s time to get busy on that if you do not.
Each one of these things might seem insignificant in light of the big picture. However, when you combine them all, they have the power to get your home business off to a profitable start.
