You just started your own home business, and you are really exciting. You should be. This is an exciting time. Let’s use that excitement, however, to prepare for harder days when owning your own business. The following list of items should be assembled in the early days of your new venture’s excitement to get you through bumps in the road and keep your dedication to your new company high.
1. Your first dollar, though likely part of an electronic exchange, should be framed and stored. The dollar can signify that first crucial interaction as the first step towards your bright financial future.
2. Your first business plan, even a rough sketch on a cocktail napkin should memorialize your idea in its infancy. It will be neat to look back at how your business has grown and your ideas have evolved.
3. Write a letter to yourself six months or a year down the road with the express purpose of encouraging yourself. In your letter, you can talk about how excited you are about your new company. Talk about the awesome changes you have already made in your life to accommodate this new challenge. Remind yourself how good this change has already been to you. When life gets challenging, it is easy to overlook all of the positives we have already experienced. This letter should remind you of those.
4. Include a letter from your spouse or kids. Knowing how proud they are of you can help you stay motivated even on hard days.
5. Pack away a favorite CD that revs you up and helps you get your fighting spirit back. I find that late eighties monster ballads really bring out the determination in my spirit. Perhaps something like this can help you to get back in the game, too.
6. Pack a mirror in your home business survival kit so you can look yourself in the face and give yourself a pep talk. Look at the person in that mirror. That person built a home business, stuck with it during the tough times, and will come out successful in the end.
