21st Century Shows an Increase in the Number of Work at Home Jobs

As the 21st century moves toward the end of its first decade we see many changes in the economy not the least of which is a dramatic increase in the number of work at home jobs.

As employers attempt to save overhead costs by offering telecommuting jobs and freelancers there is also an increase in the number of people who seek a way to make money at home. We are seeing a slow but steady return to the one-income family—at least to the degree that only one person works outside the home.

The trend toward work at home jobs began in the mid-90s when home computers started their transition into the lives of the majority of the population. So many people today have home computers that it is a natural thing on employment applications to see a spot for email address and even more common for new employees to fill out pertinent forms at home before they report for their first day of work. In fact, some employers will not even accept resumes or applications in person or by postal mail—potential employees must go to the company’s website and apply for any open positions.

Will there be saturation in the market for work at home jobs? It’s a fair question to ask but it’s unlikely for home based jobs to dry up any time in the near future. As more jobs become available more people become interested but at the same time there are still many people who prefer the “stability” of a “regular” job.

It will be many more years before everyone has grasped the concept of acquiring stability and financial security by working at home. The terms are actually a bit ludicrous when you look at the number of people who are losing those “secure” jobs.
